INIT e-mobility seminar provided valuable insights into efficient e-bus operation by integrated IT solutions

Many cities have already decided to introduce e-mobility, but the road to successful implementation often remains unclear. Participants learned how to navigate the e-mobility path at INIT’s e-mobility seminar in Karlsruhe on November 27 and 28.
Governments have set e-mobility targets, and support the way forward with public funding. This was the focus of Mona Mühlback from the Department of Electromobility and Vehicle Innovation at the Baden-Württemberg (Federal State of Germany) Ministry of Transport. She discussed possible sources of state subsidies at both the federal and national level.
The seminar of course also highlighted the perspective of public transport providers. For example, Jean-Marie Gerbaulet of the Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein described the specific requirements of an e-depot concept, while the former deputy chairman and technical director of Hamburger Hochbahn AG, Ulrich Sieg, explained how a structured preparation process helps to implement e-mobility. Public transport companies must meet numerous challenges in this process, and these were explored in detail by Martin Schmitz, technical director of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV).
How the described challenges can be met, and the successful implementation of e–buses can be achieved, was explained by INIT. Operational information systems are playing a key role in this respect. Although they have often been neglected in previous discussions, they are vital in ensuring efficient e-bus fleet operation. INIT combines multiple essential functionalities in one integrated solution: from e-simulations providing the basis for fundamental decisions, charging management, and vehicle range prediction, to extended functionalities in existing information systems, including planning, ITCS, depot management, and vehicle dispatching.
This allows public transport companies to reap the advantages of an integrated solution as they introduce e-mobility, and also to benefit from INIT’s advanced knowledge and experience, acquired through the MENDEL research project*.
The INIT customer, MAN Truck & Bus, also utilizes the e-simulation module of initplan GmbH in their consulting projects. On their behalf, Michael Voll, head of transport solutions network analysis, explained how MAN is able to have a 360° view on strategical challenges, to master them, and to avoid misguided investments.
