RIPTA partners with INIT

Already the sixth US public transport operator opts for INIT's smart ticketing system

When the Rhode Island Transportation Authority (RIPTA) decided to modernise their legacy fare system from a cash and closed-loop card to a state-of-the-art account-based and mobile ticketing system, INIT was chosen as the preferred partner. The decision was based on INIT’s success with other e-fare projects like for TriMet in Portland/Oregon (USA), and the proven ability to complete projects on-time and on-budget.

The project includes EMV-capable e-fare validators, the integration of a Bytemark mobile ticketing app, and an option to implement platform validators and Ticket Vending Machines (TVM) in future phases of RIPTA’s fare collection upgrade project and plans. Once implemented, RIPTA passengers will benefit from multiple and more convenient options to pay fares. They will be able to conveniently purchase e-fares from their account by simply tapping their card or mobile device to one of the validators. INIT’s back-end processing software, MOBILEvario, will calculate the fare, validate the transaction against the back office account and provide the remaining account balance to the rider in realtime on their mobile device. This means riders can instantly view and manage their account transactions at any time. Furthermore, the new system facilitates faster boarding.

Faster, more comfortable and more efficient

RIPTA’s On-line Validation Server (OVS) is designed for the anticipated future acceptance of contactless EMV media like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay.

The project will be implemented using an open architecture design. This means RIPTA will be able to integrate both new and existing partners easily. For example, the INIT ticketing system will incorporate RIPTA’s current CAD/AVL system, as well as fare boxes from a third party vendor for a fully functional solution. The authority hopes to slowly transition the majority of their sales transactions to mobile, retail and web-based sales channels. RIPTA plans to utilise closed loop authority cards as well as open loop and open payment options. The agency anticipates moving from a cash-on-board system to retail network purchases will allow access for all riders with more convenient options for purchasing fares. For RIPTA, this would meet their goal of steadily increasing advance fare versus on-bus purchases.
