Metrolink awards major contract for modern, account-based
ticketing system to INIT

Metrolink Rail

Metrolink, the regional rail authority in Southern California and one of the largest regional transport networks in the United States, has chosen to invest in INIT’s ticketing solution. It has awarded a contract to update and modernise Metrolink’s existing payment system to INIT.

The contract comprises 155 new VENDstation ticket vending machines, seven ticket office machines, and the account-based, back-office system, MOBILEvario. The centralised back-office system enables both cash and cashless transactions. The investment will soon start paying off through substantial reductions in operating costs.

The new VENDstation machines make it especially simple to purchase tickets. A 38.1 cm (15") touch-screen display that is easy to read in all light conditions provides a clear overview of all available tickets. Passengers in Southern California can pay using their preferred method: credit card, smart card, or cash. The ticket is then either registered to their smart card or printed as a paper ticket.

The ticketing system can be configured to customer requirements, and thanks to its open architecture, can also be quickly integrated with existing third-party systems. The flexibility allows for future system expansion.

Metrolink wanted to replace its legacy ticket vending machines with higher-quality technology. The new payment system will improve operational efficiency and fare management processes. It also makes it easier for passengers to buy tickets and speeds up the time taken to issue a ticket.

“INIT is very excited about partnering with Metrolink to bring a modernised fare system to Los Angeles,” says Roland Staib, CEO of INIT North America. The TVD’s will bring unique benefits to the agency in terms of greater efficiency and lower operating costs, while enhancing the passenger experience in getting around their city.“
