HanseCom Forum discusses the future of mobility

How can a classic transport company develop into a service- and customer-oriented mobility provider? The 6th HanseCom Forum in Hamburg, Germany, provided answers.

The annual HanseCom Forum has established itself as a fixture in the exchange on innovative projects, solutions and trends in public transport. This year, the Forum was held for the sixth time and it attracted about 150 participants to the heart of Hamburg on 14 and 15 November. The central topic: How can classic transport companies develop into service- and customer-oriented mobility providers? The answers were as varied as the list of speakers.

Innovative mobility apps are a modern means for PT companies for accessing their customers. Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) with “Jelbi” and Aachener Straßenbahn und Energieversorgungs-AG (ASEAG) with “movA” have started using such apps. In addition to public transport, these companies provide other modes of shared mobility for their users. All modes can be routed, booked and paid in a single app. Rheinbahn (Düsseldorf) and WSW mobil, the transport company of the city of Wuppertal, have also successfully demonstrated how public transport can increase its attractiveness with modern services and innovative ideas. Both companies rely on the digitalisation of their subscription service through the “Abo-Online” solution by HanseCom. Furthermore, both companies want to prospectively offer mobility in gift voucher form via voucher codes in “HandyTicket Deutschland”.

Unearthing data treasure

Transport companies have a continuously growing treasure chest of data due to the increasing digitalisation of their processes and services. Hamburger Hochbahn has started a comprehensive project for data categorisation for which the operational background system, PTnova, supplies central data. Data cataloguing gives Hamburger Hochbahn a uniform view of their data and thus a “single version of truth”. Karsten Schütt provided an interesting external look at the industry. The former long-time managing director of Deichmann explored the question what public transport can learn from the retail industry. His deliberations: Like e-commerce merchants cooperate with platforms such as Amazon and eBay, public transport could consider partnerships with other platforms. A precondition for this is that customer data remains within the transport company. INIT, HanseCom and their partners PayPal and LogPay Mobility Services were also represented in the presentation programme. Dr. Jürgen Greschner, CSO of init SE, explained the strategy of the INIT Group “Innovative. Integrated. International” and presented product highlights. HanseCom representatives focused on the decisive role of mobility platforms. With these platforms, transport companies can create central solutions for their individualised and innovative mobility offers.

< class="headline-size-h1 ">Podium discussion with high-profile round

A special highlight this year was once again the event’s podium discussion. The high-profile round with personalities from politics, transport companies and the private sector agreed on the following: Public transport is the backbone of urban mobility. However, its infrastructure must be sustainably expanded and cooperation with new mobility service providers must be further enhanced in order to further strengthen the sector. “For public transport companies, there is not just one solution, but many, in order to present themselves to their customers as modern mobility providers. Each passenger has different needs, which must be met in a targeted manner,” summarised Martin Timman, managing director of HanseCom. “This year’s HanseCom Forum has clearly demonstrated that the industry is accepting this challenge with great courage and motivation.”
