Control passenger occupancy
in real time

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a substantial drop in passenger numbers in recent months. It is essential to win back passenger confidence whilst at the same time ensuring that social distancing measures are observed.

In order to avoid overcrowded trains and buses, public transport operators have to monitor their vehicle occupancy levels in real time. Customers with an Automatic Passenger Counting System and an ITCS System based on cellular radio from INIT can now reap the benefits of an integrated solution. With just a simple system extension, they can manage occupancy levels in their ITCS.

Monitoring and controlling occupancy rates with your MOBILE-ITCS

Here's how it works: The on-board computer determines the occupancy level of a bus or train by means of passenger counting sensors such as IRMA MATRIX and transmits them to the operations control center after each stop. Results are displayed to the dispatchers in real time and matching color indicators ensure they receive an immediate overview of the situation. For example, an occupancy rate in the range of 0 to 40% can be marked in green, an occupancy rate of 40% to 70% in yellow and over 70% in red. Thresholds can be adjusted flexibly to meet changing requirements. Thanks to the clear display, dispatchers can react quickly if a vehicle exceeds the desired occupancy level - for example, by putting it in drop-off only mode or by dispatching an additional vehicle if necessary.

Empowering your passengers to make informed decisions

In addition, this information can be fed into passenger information systems and displayed in real time e.g. in our DEPARTURESlive app, on third party apps or on passenger information displays at stops. Having this information at their disposal means passengers can make informed decisions about which bus or train to take, with the reassurance that their safety is guaranteed.

For customers with differently equipped fleets, INIT is currently working on an entry-level solution which displays occupancy rates based on historical data and experience.

Improved matching of supply and demand

Transport companies also benefit from information on occupancy rates in the medium term: accurate information about occupancy rates helps to better match supply and demand and adjust schedules accordingly.

Another simple solution is available with INIT's planning and data management solution MOBILE-PLAN: When devising the timetables in the tabular view, planning staff can enter occupancy levels for every section of a trip, based on their experience. After planning is completed, the information is exported to subsequent passenger information systems. Additionally, the information can be used for analysis purposes in scheduling.

In the final stage, the system can be extended: Using a patented process, INIT’s system for passenger guidance, MOBILEguide, calculates the expected carload for each station, taking into account the predicted number of passengers leaving the train. For this purpose, MOBILEguide uses high-precision passenger counting results as well as historical data and machine learning.
