LIVE SaaS vehicle monitoring and passenger information system

The Department of State Growth, Tasmania has introduced the LIVE system, consisting of LIVEavl for automatic vehicle location and computer-aided dispatch as well as LIVErtpi for real-time passenger information. LIVE is a centralised, modular and web-based Software-as-a-Service solution developed by Mattersoft, member of the INIT Group. Buses in the state capital of Hobart and southern Tasmania as well as ferries were the first vehicles to be integrated. The system has since been extended to a number of northern Tasmanian bus routes, and further regions across the Australian state will follow.

LIVE enables public transport companies in Tasmania to track and monitor their vehicles and allows passengers to get all the information they need on upcoming departures online, all accurately down to the second. The advanced software platform provides real-time data and planning tools to help streamline operations, ensuring greater reliability, passenger satisfaction, and sustainability. Further bus operators can be added easily, and thanks to the system’s scalability and flexibility, it can be scaled up or down to meet the needs of the respective operators.

State-of-the-art SaaS solution for supervisors and passengers

As LIVE is a centralized SaaS solution, everything is managed, maintained and updated regularly by INIT. The latest cloud technology guarantees that Tasmanian operators will always use a safe, up-to-date solution with the newest features. The LIVE platform permits supervisors to access critical information and control functions from any device with an up-to-date browser, eliminating the need for specialized hardware. The vehicles only need to collect basic data such as GPS coordinates and trip identification.

In all, the system combines important features of daily operator work, among them:

  • Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI): Providing live updates on bus and ferry services, ensuring commuters can see when their transport will arrive.
  • Route and Schedule Optimization: Continuously analyzing vehicle performance to help transport operators maximize route efficiency, and align services with passenger demand.
  • Data-Driven Decision-Making: Offering transport authorities detailed insights into fleet operations to enhance service delivery and performance.

For passengers, LIVE is a great help as it facilitates to access real-time updates on bus and ferry arrivals, delays, and service changes. The location of a bus or ferry can be followed online via web browser or app so passengers know when the vehicle will reach their stop. Real-time information is shown once a vehicle starts its route. This information is also available for passengers on Google Maps.

State-wide rollout

Real-time passenger information will be an important part of Tasmania’s public transportation system, as a state-wide rollout for the system is in order. Long-time INIT customer Metro Tasmania has updated its app to include the real-time information as part of its journey planner. To Shane Bedford, Sales Manager at INIT Australia and New Zealand, the implementation of the new system is not only a decisive factor for Tasmania and its passengers but also for INIT and Mattersoft: “This partnership marks a significant step forward in modernizing Tasmania’s public transport system. By leveraging our advanced cloud technology, we aim to enhance operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction, ensuring that Tasmanians have access to reliable and real-time transport information.”
