INIT seminar “A 360° view of electromobility” attracted a record number of participants

  • A focus on the successful implementation of e-mobility in public transport
  • Helpful best practice reports
  • Tasks in planning, in the depot and in operations were examined

Karlsruhe, 5 May 2021

How can electric buses be successfully introduced? How can they be managed efficiently in my day-to-day operations? What needs to be monitored and controlled? Participants of INIT Group’s online seminar “Electromobility in public transport” received valuable answers to these questions. Due to the pandemic, INIT’s popular series of seminars took place online for the first time – and attracted an unprecedented number of participants. Almost 300 public transport experts joined either the German event on April 22 or the English event on May 4.

The implementation of e-buses constitutes a fundamental change for a public transport company’s daily operations which is why the seminar focused on the operational processes that might need to be reconsidered and adjusted. It also highlighted successful examples of implementation, drawing on best practice reports from pioneering public transport providers.

INIT experts explained the support that their electromobility software suite eMOBILE can provide. It covers all operational processes of e-mobility, and the most important areas – planning, depot management and operations were examined during the seminar. Consequently, participants learned how they can ensure that:

  • Runs and duties are optimized for the deployment of e-buses
  • E-buses are cost effectively charged and ready for service when required
  • All vehicles are well dispatched
  • All e-buses reach the end of their run

All these tasks are covered by INIT’s integrated solution for the management of e-bus fleets.

In addition, several experts from public transport providers in three countries gave valuable insights into the electromobility projects that they have already successfully implemented.

Guido Swinkels from the Dutch transportation provider Keolis Nederland described the introduction of an e-bus fleet from an operator’s perspective. Last year Keolis put one of Europe’s largest e-bus fleets into operation in the Netherlands. In order to cope with the new operational challenges, they implemented significant elements of the INIT eMOBILE software suite.

Heribert Kalteis from the German transport provider “das Stadtwerk Regensburg.Mobilität” explained the need to plan runs with a completely new mindset; something that is considered essential since it is no longer the drivers’ permitted working hours which restrict the blocks, but the limited range of e-buses and their need for opportunity charging.

Keolis Norway went live with one of Northern Europe’s largest e-bus concessions in Bergen, in December 2020. Tore Grøneng and Hugo Vidal reported that they met their challenging timescales thanks to the implementation of INIT Group’s cloud-based solution. Because of the SaaS approach, they were able to get their IT systems set up within just four months. It will provide efficient tools and support to their operations for the duration of their concession.

Feedback from participants was unanimous: The seminar was a great mix of interesting best practice reports and valuable insights into the essential role that IT solutions can play. As a result, it will provide them with valuable support for their own e-bus projects in the future.
