Karlsruhe  / Regensburg  – 12 June 2025

Sweeping changes are underway in Regensburg. The Bavarian public transport company das Stadtwerk.Mobilität is modernizing and digitalizing all its processes. It is introducing INIT's cloud-based Intermodal Transport Control System MOBILE-ITCS nextGen and equipping its buses with INIT on-board computers and TFT displays.

The old intermodal transport control system with its hardware components was deemed to no longer be able to fulfil the increased requirements as well as the demand for greater digitalization. Therefore, the company started a EU-wide tender aiming to find a solution that would benefit them, their drivers and not least, the passengers. INIT was chosen to provide the Intermodal Transport Control System (ITCS) and the vehicle hardware.

Decision in favor of a cloud solution

Regensburg has chosen MOBILE-ITCS nextGen in the cloud which means that das Stadtwerk.Mobilität employees will not be tied to server operations and unnecessary administration and yet the company will benefit from increased cybersecurity expertise. This is why the decision was made in favor of the cloud solution. Das Stadtwerk.Mobilität has already had positive experiences with other web-based software and so the public transport company is therefore planning to move even more solutions to the cloud in the future.

The system is also designed to manage unforeseen future developments, for example the implementation of autonomous vehicles. With the INIT solution, the company feels prepared to deal with any challenges that lie ahead.

MOBILE-ITCS nextGen will be closely linked to various other systems. The public transport company has been using INIT’s MOBILE-PLAN planning and data management solution and the MOBILE-PERDIS personnel assignment system for several years. The staff in the control center benefit from the integration of their programs, as they not only have to deal with operations, but are also to deploy buses. For example, they manage vehicle assignments with MOBILE-PERDIS and charge management for their electric buses.

Route display and diversion management

Other aspects also went in favor of MOBILE-ITCS, among them the efficient diversion management tool: Regensburg’s bus network has a large number of lines that have to be broken at terminal stops for diversions. With MOBILE-ITCS nextGen, the route band can be easily displayed in the line display. This means that staff can quickly and clearly see several lines with their stops next to each other and use this display to directly initiate dispatching measures and send driver messages without having to open additional windows.

Rapid passenger information with RESPONSEassist

One of the solutions that das Stadtwerk.Mobilität uses to make travel easier for passengers and support control center staff is RESPONSEassist, the system for automated multi-channel information and incident management. The solution sends automated passenger information via various media. The control center can concentrate on their dispatch work and does not have to also inform drivers and enter the same message into a variety of different systems at the same time. Instead, important information can be disseminated quickly, whether via an app, social media or various DPI displays.

On-board computer for the entire fleet

This fresh start is not just about software. Das Stadtwerk.Mobilität is equipping its entire bus fleet with new COPILOTpc3 on-board computers and TOUCHmdt control units for the drivers. In addition, they implement PIDvisio 29 ultrawide DPI displays, which give passengers detailed information about alternative stops in the event of diversions, but also show advertising, news or infotainment programs. Including the subcontractor buses, all 150 vehicles will be fitted with new on-board hardware. A test run with all vehicle types is currently underway.

Sandra Schönherr, Operations Director at das Stadtwerk.Mobilität is certain that "Something great will come out of all this. At das Stadtwerk.Mobilität, 300 people will be working on it and will feel the improvements – drivers, admin staff, workshop staff, the whole company." INIT’s Managing Director Klaus Janke underlines: “We are proud and pleased to be able to inspire another company with our ITCS. The fact that we were able to convince das Stadtwerk.Mobilität of the strengths of our solution and therefore replace an operations control system that had been running for many years speaks in our favor. We look forward to another successful project.”
