Public transport operators are facing increasingly complex operating environments. Artificial intelligence and other data-driven technologies (Smart Intelligence) offer tremendous potential to optimize service offerings, improve service quality, streamline processes, and reduce costs. INIT, the world’s leading provider of integrated planning, dispatching, telematics, and ticketing systems, will showcase how these technologies help transport operators address these challenges at the International Trade Fair for Transport Technology InnoTrans in Berlin. Bridging Knowledge Gaps and Easing Employees’ Workload

At the core of these solutions is a new approach: Employees no longer need extensive operational knowledge or years of hands-on experience; instead, INIT systems provide them with all relevant information tailored to each specific situation. This applies, for example, to the Intermodal Transport Control System MOBILE-ITCS. As a result, employees make informed decisions more quickly and with greater confidence. In addition, INIT solutions help relieve pressure on already stretched workforces by automating routine tasks and processes.

Users of the white-label app URmove can access an AI-powered smart travel companion on their smartphones. Chatbots or digital avatars provide immediate, conversational assistance in natural language for questions about fares and connections, ticket booking, or service disruptions, while enabling users to conveniently modify their bookings through self-service. To generate personalized travel recommendations, the AI considers distances, travel times, user preferences, and real-time traffic data. The app provides adaptive recommendations and can suggest suitable alternatives based on the user’s preferred routes, travel times, or modes of transport.

AI Reduces Language Barriers in the Driver’s Cabin

Due to ongoing driver shortages, transport companies are increasingly having to rely on newly recruited and less experienced drivers. INIT’s COPILOT onboard computers help them get up to speed faster and quickly become confident operating different routes. Intuitive user interfaces, similar to those on smartphones, significantly reduce training time. To overcome language barriers, the user interface is available in multiple languages. Thanks to an AI-based assistant, drivers will also receive messages from the control center in their native language in the future. Turn-by-turn navigation provides additional support, especially on routes they are not yet familiar with.

Smart Data Utilization for Demand-Driven Service Planning

Punctuality and occupancy rates are key metrics for the efficient management of public transport. The modular analytics and reporting platform DILAX Citisense® combines vehicle data with data from other sources - including schedule and location data, stop information, ticket data, and calendar and event data. This creates a solid foundation for demand-driven service planning. Capacity can be managed more effectively, and over- or under-utilization can be identified early on. The benefits include improved cost efficiency, optimized resource utilization, improved service quality, and a solid basis for decision-making in both strategic and operational planning.

AI Protects Passengers - Anonymously and Efficiently

Expectations for passenger safety continue to grow. In the future, AI-based video analysis systems will help automatically detect potentially critical situations or aggressive behavior and enable faster, more effective responses. At the same time, protecting personal privacy remains a top priority. AI-based real-time pseudonymization protects sensitive areas of the video and the passengers' privacy directly within the vehicle, laying the groundwork for selectively controlling the group of individuals authorized to view the video footage without compromising data protection requirements. This allows footage to be analyzed without making individuals identifiable. Targeted de-anonymization by authorized agencies is possible only when necessary.

The data can also be used to anonymously analyze passenger flows across all routes, thereby enabling well-founded capacity forecasts and demand-based transit planning.

Real-time tracking of buses and trams in the depot is a major challenge. While GPS—usually in combination with other methods—has become the standard for outdoor tracking, indoor tracking is subject to higher accuracy requirements and is often tied to proprietary, costly, and failure-prone systems. The MOBILE-DMS depot management system uses AI to combine multiple indoor and outdoor positioning technologies, significantly increasing accuracy, reducing costs and dependence on proprietary vendors.
