regiomove booking and payment platform

New mobility concepts and the integration of intermodal transport services into one single platform are modern ways to reduce car traffic. Karlsruhe is already well on its way to achieving this with its lighthouse project regiomove, connecting  several mobility services in the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion.

In December 2017, several project partners launched regiomove under the umbrella of the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion (see photo). Since November 2020, the app is available in the App Store and Google Play Store. The project aims to promote mobility in the whole Mittlerer Oberrhein (Middle Upper Rhine Valley) region in Germany by integrating as many mobility services as possible into a single planning and booking platform.

The innovative mobility concept regiomove is a lighthouse project that is visible far beyond our region. Public transport ideas that are conceived in this region are in demand worldwide. With regiomove, we connect mobility providers in our region and improve infrastructure. The resulting concepts and marketable products should attract worldwide attention.

The regiomove mobility platform combines several modes of transport, ranging from bike and car rentals to buses and trams, allowing passengers to plan their intermodal journey using the regiomove app. They only have to register once, and can then see all the intermodal travel options, book them with just a few clicks and all their trips will be automatically paid using the stored payment method. The corresponding booking and payment platform has been developed by INIT. This platform not only has interfaces to all transport service providers, but also ensures that users receive the appropriate ticket or access code at the right stage of their journey.

In order to facilitate the switch from one mode of transport to another, several mobility hubs, called ports, are being built in the Karlsruhe region. Here, passengers can conveniently combine journeys by tram, bus, rental car or bicycle. In addition, service areas are being installed, such as information terminals, e-charging stations or bicycle service stations. The integration of other forms of transport such as on-demand minibuses and car sharing of electric vehicles is already in the planning stage.

Regiomove is not simply a public transport project, it is a complete mobility project. The app suggests possible routes using a combination of public transport and active travel options such as rental bicycles instead of using a private car (and indicates the associated CO² emissions for each travel option). It aims to encourage users to switch to other modes of transport. With each enquiry, the current traffic situation is taken into account - for all modes of transport. For example, if there is congestion on the motorway, the app recommends taking the tram instead. In addition, the app also informs passengers about the number of parking spaces available in car parks, about the parking charges and even about their opening hours.

The next step is the connection with other transport associations: The Ortenau district around Offenburg was recently integrated. The Ortenau tariff network was created as a client in the system and received a separate app with its own marketing presence. In the medium term, this will also enable cross-network, i.e. inter-regional, bookings. In this respect, too, regiomove serves as a model for other mobility platforms. Other mobility service providers will also be gradually integrated here.
