Public transit ridership in the Seattle region is growing, and the ORCA fare system has had a direct impact on that growth. With INIT’s technology supporting seamless tap-and-go transactions across buses, ferries, and light rail, riders enjoy a more convenient, hassle-free travel experience across six regional partner services: Sound Transit, King County Metro, Community Transit, Everett Transit, Kitsap Transit and Pierce Transit.
The system has experienced significant milestones since its implementation, including a record-breaking 82 million ORCA card taps at its one-year anniversary. Additionally, 79% of fares are now being paid with an ORCA card1. This is a clear sign of the transformative impact the fare system has had on riders in the Seattle metropolis.
The ORCA system now serves 431,000 customers across all operators in the region, with total trips jumping from 134 million in 2023 to 151 million in 20242. This growth in ridership highlights the ORCA system’s ability to handle increased demand, a key factor as the region prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup where an estimated 750,000 fans3 are expected to visit Seattle for the Games.
As more people embrace the ORCA system, the plans to add buses, light rail extensions, and improved ferry services will only boost the passenger experience.
Public transit in the Seattle region will be crucial in managing large crowds, both now and in the future. It’s not just about supporting fans—it’s about creating a transit network that’s prepared for what’s ahead. With INIT technology powering the ORCA fare system, the region is better equipped to handle surges in ridership.
