Karlsruhe  / Germany  – March 17, 2026

With INIT as its technology partner, Wuppertal-based transport company WSW mobil is creating real added value for passengers. Soon, passengers will be able to purchase their tickets cash-free using debit cards, credit cards, or digital wallets on their smartphones and smartwatches. To support this shift, INIT is delivering both a new back-office ticketing system and new on-board equipment.

On-board ticket sales with INIT’s combined computer and ticket printer

On-board ticket sales, which have already dropped significally, will be reduced even further. Since September 1, 2024, only single-ride and bicycle tickets have been available on board buses in Wuppertal and throughout the transport association. Starting in 2026, these, too, will additionally be offered through cashless payment. With INIT’s technology, WSW mobil is fully prepared for this transition.

Laying the ground for future ticketing innovations

In WSW mobil’s fleet of 300 buses, all on-board computers, data terminals, and ticket printers will be replaced with a single device: INIT’s EVENDpc, a combined on-board computer and ticket printer already successful in operation in numerous projects worldwide. The MOBILEvario ticketing back-office system also provides the flexibility to support a future switch to account-based ticketing – a system INIT has already implemented in cities such as Houston, San Diego, Turku, Portland and Trier.

Operations control center equipped with state-of-the-art technology

WSW mobil is already at the forefront of operations control technology. Its control center not only relies on INIT’s MOBILE-ITCS but also on RESPONSEassist, a software solution developed jointly with WSW mobil. RESPONSEassist enables dispatchers to handle incidents efficiently using digital workflows, deliver reliable passenger information with a high degree of automation, and generate daily reports. Other INIT Group systems are also in use at WSW mobil for personnel scheduling and data provisioning.

“As a partner in the development of RESPONSEassist, WSW mobil is a key reference customer for us”, said Klaus Janke, Managing Director of INIT GmbH. “The fact that Wuppertal’s public transport system continues to rely on INIT solutions – and now also on our ticketing technology – underscores the strength of our long-standing partnership.”
