Metrolink’s World-Class Test During the International Games

  • 26% increase in weekend boardings
  • 12% increase in year-over-year ridership

Major Events Test Transit Systems

When a major international soccer tournament brought thousands of visitors to Southern California, Metrolink expanded service and deployed employee volunteers to help new riders reach matches and events across the region. The impact went beyond a few crowded trains: weekend boardings rose 26 percent compared with the previous six weeks, while system-wide ridership increased 12 percent year over year. The surge demonstrated how a major event can influence travel behavior when reliable service is available.

Many passengers were using Metrolink for the first time. Metrolink employees contributed 400 hours of volunteer service to support those riders. They answered questions, directed passengers, and provided assistance throughout the journey. Their work addressed something technology alone cannot: the uncertainty people feel when navigating a transit system for the first time.

On the go ticketing

INIT’s ticket vending machines gave passengers a way to purchase fares at the station and included ADA-specific functionality for riders with disabilities. During periods of concentrated demand, an accessible and understandable ticketing process helps prevent confusion from becoming congestion.

The combination of expanded service, accessible ticketing, and in-person support mattered because passengers do not experience transit as separate operational components. They experience one continuous journey. A problem at the ticket machine can affect the platform; uncertainty in the station can delay boarding; a lack of information can discourage someone from using the system again.

Ridership Growth

That is what makes ridership growth significant. A tournament can bring people to public transportation once. A successful first trip can change whether they consider using it again for work, weekend travel or another regional event.

Real-world experience under those conditions provides more than theory. Metrolink’s approach was tested under demanding conditions and contributed to measurable ridership growth.

We are proud to stand alongside our transit partners to help them deliver reliable and frictionless service when it matters most. Together, we make it easier to manage even the busiest moments with confidence.
