Finding solutions to the challenges of tomorrow's public transport

For more than 30 years, it has been our vision to make technological progress promptly available for public transit, so that it becomes more efficient and attractive. In various work areas, INIT spares no effort to put this vision into action. Our employees work in close collaboration with our customers to leverage their insights, and participate in standardization projects. At the same time, our passionate Research & Development team collaborates with renowned partners in finding the solutions to the challenges of tomorrow’s public transit.

INIT’s research and development topics

Our vision of tomorrow’s mobility is a transit system that is multi-modal, which allows effortless use of and change between all these modes, while providing maximum comfort for passengers. Furthermore, we envision smooth and sustainable operations that are cost-and resource-efficient. By participating in various research projects, we are getting closer and closer to that vision, and have taken an active role in creating trends in public transit. Here are some of our projects:

 

Current Research Projects

DiMo-FuH


The project DiMo-FuH (Digital mobility - vehicle and stop) pursues the goal of standardizing various communication processes. First, the project team studies the communication between the vehicle and its surroundings, including for example, the control center and passenger devices. Second, the researchers try to find standards for how the entities at a stop communicate with each other and to a third-party system.

DiMo-OMP


In the DiMo-OMP (Digital Mobility – Open Mobility Platform) project, the architectural framework for an intermodal travel information and booking platform is developed and largely standardized. The project team plans to build a comprehensive system of interfaces enabling various public transit services to exchange data. This way, a single app can provide the available travel options, as well as booking and payment capabilities, across borders.

EBSF_2


The primary focus of the European research project EBSF_2 (European Bus System of the Future 2) is to improve the image of the bus through solutions for increased efficiency of the system, mainly in terms of energy consumption and operational costs, as required by today’s economic situation.
The research team concentrated on the interface between the vehicle and the control center, and the interfaces within the vehicle.

INK 2016


Following the research project aim4it which was started in 2014 to develop solutions to make public transit journeys for persons with disabilities as barrier-free as possible, the Austrian project, INK 2016, was birthed. The research activities focus on the interfaces between the vehicle and mobile devices of the passengers. Additionally, the project team plans the implementation of a solution on a Bluetooth basis.

iQMobility


The goal of the iQMobility cooperation project is to collect data that indicate how systems for planning, dispatching and depot management will have to be adapted to support the deployment of driverless vehicles. By doing so, the impact of operating autonomous buses can be further explored.

MENDEL


The MENDEL research project will help to prepare public transit for the introduction of electro mobility. It aims to implement and optimize the planning and operation of electric buses while minimizing the strain on the network. New algorithms take into account the special requirements in order to provide cost-efficient charging infrastructure.

INIT’s Research & Development team also participates in several events, like conferences and exhibitions, to present its projects and findings to a wider audience.

Completed Projects

3iBS


In 2012, the intelligent, innovative, integrated Bus Systems project (3iBS) started. Until 2015, a research team worked on developing a new generation of buses adapted to the specificities of European cities. The research objective is to make public transit more attractive for passengers, and more efficient and economical for operators.

aim4it


aim4it was a research project to develop a public transit system that provides barrier-free access for passengers with special mobility needs. The project started in 2014 and was completed in 2016. Its findings are the basis for the follow-up project INK 2016.

EBSF


From 2008 to 2013, the project EBSF (European Bus System of the Future) was focused on developing a new generation of urban bus system specifically adapted to European cities. The research team worked on solutions to increase the attractiveness and raise the image of bus systems.

InREAKT


The research project InREAKT, running from 2013 till 2016, pursued the goal of automatically identifying safety-critical situations and emergencies within a public transit system. A comprehensive system of sensors detects incidents and transmits alerts to an event management system in the transit company’s control center.

IP-KOM-ÖV


IP-KOM-ÖV was a research project to develop standardized communication services for public transit based on internet protocols. The research team defined interfaces and architectures that sustainably improve the access to passenger information. The project started in 2010 and was completed in 2014.
